Since I had semi-structured interviews I set up columns in the transcript to record the questions corresponding to each piece of transcript, and got Nvivo to break the pieces up and set time-stamps. As Kathleen mentioned above, an advantage is that you can easily skip the "dross" that's always part of interviews, and you can make a start on coding as you transcribe. I couldn't see any advantage to using an external program for transcription, so I did it all within NVivo. (I used the Windows sound controls to filter out the noise). However I didn't find any great difference in audibility whichever of the programs I used for transcription. Some of the interviews had taken place in noisy cafes (a mistake I won't make again!), so I had some problems making out what my respondents had said. I've used NVivo 10 extensively to transcribe (and analyse) semi-structured interview data.Initially I experimented with using F4 for the transcription and also a piece of software that came with my Sony voice recorder. Verdict: Good if you have little money (but have time for corrections) and the interview has common words and no background noise. Then when you are analysing the transcripts, if you find yet another inaccuracy and go back to the recording, then print out, some of the full stops are all over the place again. Cons: Not good for less clear recordings, has lots of troublesome full stops. So I printed out a) immediately each was transcribed and b) during and after editing. (It took me several goes to get my 1 hr plus interview transcriptions up to standard, so don't correct punctuation until the end) You don't have to worry about losing your transcript, you can print it out by Word or TXT file at any time. The other problem is that you can go back and change the punctuation, but the next time you open the file the full stops will be one space past the end of the word. However for top quality clear speech (no background noise) recordings of general words, it does pretty well. And it is not consistent with its substitutions! If the sound quality is not perfect, you will also have a lot of retyping to do. so it is'dumb', you will have to re-type every occurrence of the word. There is nowhere you can upload a 'this word' is spelled. My interviews were medical - NVivo does not recognise medical terms. The transcript has full stops and capital letters whenever there is a pause in speech, and sometimes where there is an emphasis.
The transcript can be edited in NVivo listening to the recording which can be played back at 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.5 and 2x speeds. The transcription comes back in less then 30 min for about a 60 min interview. I recorded my interviews on various devices, then uploaded to NVivo auto transcription.
